What you are Entitled to.

What You Are Entitled To

Have you ever felt locked in by your circumstances? Maybe it’s a job you don’t like. Maybe you feel overworked by the activities of raising a family and juggling work and home life. Or maybe you are being confronted by a chronic illness. How do we live like the spiritual beings we are, when we feel so locked into the world?
Some well-meaning Course students would simply say the world is not real and that is that! Your body is not real and sickness is an illusion. One student said recently, “I don’t want to focus on illusions and my friend’s sickness is an illusion, but that approach doesn’t seem to help my friend who is sick.” And, she is absolutely right — that approach, frankly, is not helpful. When we deny something that we believe in, we only reinforce the thing we deny. Plus, the fact that we are experiencing the thing that we are trying to deny only makes us feel more guilty. In this way, we use the Course (whose purpose is to lead us out of guilt) as a tool to reinforce our guilt.
It would help us (and the person going through the sickness) far more to focus on the truth instead of making the problem real by our adamant denial of it. As the supplement to the Course, The Song of Prayer says, “There are decisions to make here [in the world], and they must be made whether they are illusions or not.” And, in the Course’s text, it says, “The best defense is not to attack another position, but to protect the truth.”
So, when faced by the things of the world that seem to imprison us, we must inject the solution into the circumstance and not simply deny its existence — that is an unhelpful type of denial. True denial, from the Course’s perspective, states that nothing that is not of God has any power over you. Thus the limitations of the world, whether they be financial, job problems or family cannot rob you of your joy or happiness (which in the end is our real ultimate goal in pursuing any of our worldly things) unless we let them. A mind focused on God and His good pleasure to give you the Kingdom is the only thing you are really entitled to!

The Sustaining Love of God

by Beverly Hutchinson McNeff

When I was young, Easter was a big deal. We always got new outfits for church and mine always included a hat or bow for my hair. Everyone I knew celebrated Easter with baskets, bonnets and smiles.
Think about the people, though, who lived during the time of Jesus. He was their savior, and he had been killed. In their minds, their hopes had been killed as well. His disciples not only could not save him, they actually abandoned him. They were frightened that they might be killed too. They weren’t out shopping for Easter bonnets, and there wasn’t much to smile about.
You see, we know the end of the story. We know that there was nothing to fear. Death could not end love; the Son of God would arise in glory. But, the disciples and people of that time, however, did not have that awareness. It’s easy to not fear when you know the outcome, isn’t it?
What do you fear in your life? You already know the final outcome. You have been and forever will be sustained by the love of God. Now is the time to arise in glory and affirm this truth in the face of whatever is occurring. Life is not to be feared but lived, and lived fully.
Jesus told us to be of good cheer for he had overcome the world, and so can we. He was not just talking about the fact that death could not end life, but that no matter what fear befalls us, we can move through it to the truth.
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me.” This is not just part of the 23rd psalm, but a statement of truth. The “shadows of death” are our fearful thoughts that make us feel alone, and yet we are never alone. God is here and with us now.
We may deny the truth and cower in fear, but that does not stop the fact that God is here and with us now. We know how the story turns out. The greatest threat of this world … death … was overcome by love. Do you not think, then, that love can overcome whatever is concerning you now?
Let us not dwell on the crucifixions in our lives but move on to the resurrection, the miracles that await us. You are sustained by the love of God. There is nothing to fear. So, put on your Easter bonnet and smile!

How to Train Your Thoughts

To enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one’s family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one’s own mind. If a man can control his mind he can find the way to Enlightenment, and all wisdom and virtue will naturally come to him.” -Buddha

“A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.” -Mahatma Gandhi
“Change your thoughts, and you change your world.” -Norman Vincent Peale

To begin to live the life we’ve always dreamed of, we must first change our thinking. If there’s anything about your life that you’re not happy with, good news! All it takes is a shift in your thoughts to begin to change it. So many of us, however, believe that if we just keep doing what we’re doing, eventually something will change and life will just “get better” because we want it to.
“Problems cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them.” -Albert Einstein

Or, to paraphrase another quote, when we think what we’ve always thought, we’ll get what we’ve always got.
Our minds run rampant with thoughts, and until we begin the process of controlling our thinking, we’re left at their mercy. The first step in controlling our thoughts is to notice what we’re thinking. Until we can step aside and be the observer of our thoughts instead of actively caught up in thinking them, we can’t begin to control them.
Our minds like to operate in ‘stealth mode’ making us forget that there is a thinker behind the thoughts, a thinker who can choose which thoughts to think!

1. Pay attention to every thought and feeling that doesn’t feel good. For me, in the beginning, this was a lot of thoughts. I lived in a lot of mental pain, but I was determined to turn it around. Don’t stress about how long this will take or how many thoughts don’t feel good, just begin slowly and notice the ones that make you feel uncomfortable, less-than, defeated, angry, jealous, fearful, etc.
Note: Simply noticing the thoughts is a great leap on the road to Nirvana, since you’re separating yourself from them in a powerful way.
2. Don’t judge your thoughts. Our thoughts are not personal, they’re merely following the patterns of what we’ve allowed ourselves to think before. Having bad thoughts doesn’t make us bad people. We are not “more inclined” to have bad thoughts than anyone else. We merely have patterns of allowing the thoughts or rejecting them. The more we allow them, the more those negative thoughts will come to us. The more often we think positive thoughts, the more positive thoughts will come, and the less frequent negative ones will be able to “make purchase” and settle in. This is a process, and we must consciously choose to think better thoughts before better thoughts will come to us- but don’t judge. Just notice.
“If thoughts or ideas are not really ‘mine, then whence do they arise and who is their author? Actually, they don’t have a ‘who’ of origin at all but instead merely arise from a ‘what’. The content of calibratable field of consciousness is like a thought bank regimented by a specific energy field of a level of the collective consciousness of mankind. Similar thoughts, concepts, and ideas congregate at various levels and are orchestrated under the influence of the attention of the central ‘attractor field’ that, like gravity, attracts ideas of similar gravity or density.” -David Hawkins PhD
3. Practice self-compassion. Merely observing a negative thought is an incredible advancement in consciousness. If you then berate yourself for thinking it, or being stuck in a negative thought pattern, you’re taking yourself back into the spiral of negativity.
Honor yourself for doing this work. Honor yourself for being brave enough to watch your negative thoughts. Honor yourself for beginning to change what you’re thinking and cultivate positivity. Honor yourself for becoming the person you want to be, one thought at a time!
4. Ask yourself, “Is this thought necessary? What can I think that’s better?” I love asking these questions because they immediately stop my negative thoughts in their tracks. I go from “Yikes, this is so bad, I wonder what I’m going to do about this?” to “Wow, what can I love about this situation? What’s the best possible thing that can come from this?” which is way more fun.
Anytime I’m tempted to think a negative thought, I a) notice that it doesn’t feel good, b) honor myself for catching it, and c) ask myself, “What can I think about that I love? What can I think about that makes me feel good? Those negative thoughts no longer have a place- the “thinker behind the thoughts” is too occupied creating the life she loves and wants to pay attention to those negative thoughts that hold her back.
“All truly wise thoughts have been thoughts already thousands of times; but to make them truly ours, we must think them over again honestly, till they take root in our personal experience.” -Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
“Let the wise guard their thoughts, which are difficult to perceive, extremely subtle, and wander at will. Thought which is well guarded is the bearer of happiness.” -Buddha

Reiki Healing

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy."

A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Many have reported miraculous results.

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

An amazingly simple technique to learn, the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class. This ability is passed on during an "attunement" given by a Reiki master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of "life force energy" to improve one's health and enhance the quality of life.

Its use is not dependent on one's intellectual capacity or spiritual development and therefore is available to everyone. It has been successfully taught to thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds.

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not. Because Reiki comes from God, many people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with the experience of their religion rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.

While Reiki is not a religion, it is still important to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing, recommended that one practice certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony, which are nearly universal across all cultures.

decided to add the Reiki Ideals to the practice of Reiki. The Ideals came in part from the five prinicples of the Meiji emperor of Japan whom Dr. Usui admired. The Ideals were developed to add spiritual balance to Usui Reiki. Their purpose is to help people realize that healing the spirit by consciously deciding to improve oneself is a necessary part of the Reiki healing experience. In order for the Reiki healing energies to have lasting results, the client must accept responsibility for her or his healing and take an active part in it. Therefore, the Usui system of Reiki is more than the use of the Reiki energy. It must also include an active commitment to improve oneself in order for it to be a complete system. The ideals are both guidelines for living a gracious life and virtues worthy of practice for their inherent value.
